Contents related to the modern physics field involve the knowledge of the production and interaction of radiation with matter. The attenuation of the radiation evidences the macroscopic manifestation of this interaction. This study presents an apparatus intended for teaching practices to determine the lead mass attenuation coefficient for gamma-ray photons from a source of 137Cs (photons with energy of approximately 662 keV). Traditionally, this determination is performed using lead plates of known thicknesses. However, this focus generally produces discrepant results related to the mass attenuation coefficient adopted values, with deviations around 15%. In the approach presented here, which is innovative, the plates were replaced by small spheres or powders of the analyzed material (lead). The results show that this substitution significantly reduced the deviations from the theoretical values. In the best experimental condition, the errors were between 2% and 4% for the spheres and the powder, respectively. Among the advantages of the proposed method are the possibility of continuous variations in the thickness and the geometry of the attenuating material, and the analysis of the influence of porous systems on the measurement of radiation attenuation.

Conteúdos relacionados à área de Física Moderna envolvem o conhecimento da produção e interação da radiação com a matéria. A manifestação macroscópica dessa interação se evidencia pela atenuação da radiação incidente no material. Neste estudo, apresenta-se o uso de um aparato experimental destinado a práticas de ensino visando a determinação do coeficiente de atenuação do chumbo para fótons de raios gama provenientes de uma fonte de 137Cs (fótons com energia de aproximadamente 662 keV). Tradicionalmente, essa determinação é realizada utilizando-se como material absorvedor placas de chumbo de espessuras conhecidas. Entretanto, em geral, esse enfoque leva a resultados discrepantes em relação ao valor do coeficiente de atenuação teórico para o chumbo, com desvios em torno de 15%. No método aqui apresentado, sugere-se a substituição das placas por esferas ou pó de chumbo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o método proposto reduziu sensivelmente os desvios do coeficiente de atenuação medido em relação aos valores teóricos (simulados). Na melhor condição experimental os erros ficaram entre 2 e 4%. Entre as grandes vantagens do método abordado estão à possibilidade de variações contínuas na espessura e na geometria do material absorvedor e análise da influência de sistemas porosos na medida da atenuação da radiação.

Quando se estuda a qualidade física de meios porosos como o solo uma propriedade de bastante relevância é a sua densidade, ρs. As medidas de ρs são importantes devido à influência desta propriedade em outras deste sistema poroso (e.g., porosidade, umidade volumétrica, armazenamento de água, etc). Neste trabalho propõe-se uma metodologia alternativa para a medida de ρs, chamada de método da sela a vácuo. A impermeabilização da amostra, contrário aos métodos tradicionais como torrão parafinado, é feita utilizando embalagem plástica com posterior evacuação do ar interno usando bomba de vácuo. Medidas de ρs pelo método do torrão parafinado foram utilizadas como referência. Os resultados obtidos mostram que em relação ao método do torrão parafinado, ρs medido pelo método da sela a vácuo é, em média, subestimado para todos os diferentes tipos de solos analisados. O método proposto é mais rápido e apresenta maior confiabilidade na impermeabilização que o método tradicional, além disso, permite reutilizar a amostra para novas medidas. O novo método ainda pode ser facilmente implementado em laboratórios de ensino de física para o ensino médio e para o ensino superior nos cursos de bacharelado, engenharias e agronomia. Por se tratar de um método que envolve pouco manuseio, rápido e de fácil implementação, torna-se ideal para o estudo não somente de ρs, mas também de conceitos envolvidos em sua medida como massa, volume, massa específica, peso, peso aparente e empuxo.

When the physical quality of porous media such as soil is studied one of the properties of great importance is its bulk density, ρs. Measurements of ρs have great relevance due to its influence in other porous system properties (e.g. porosity, volumetric water content, water storage, etc.). In this paper is proposed an alternative methodology of ρs measurement named vacuum-sealed method. Samples coating, contrary to the traditional methods such as the paraffin-coated, was carried out using a plastic packaging followed by the sample internal air evacuation through a vacuum pump device. The determination of the clod samples ρs by the paraffin-coated method was utilized as a reference. The obtained results showed that compared to the paraffin-coated method, the average ρs measured by the vacuum-sealed method presented underestimated values considering all the soils analyzed. The proposed method is faster and has greater coating reliability than the traditional method with the additional advantage of sample reuse for new measurements. The new method can also be easily implemented in teaching physics laboratories in high school grade and bachelor’s, engineering, and environmental science courses. As a method that requires minimal sample preparation, easy to implement, and fast, it becomes ideal for the study not only of ρs but also to the discussion of concepts involved in its measurement such as mass, volume, weight, apparent weight and buoyancy force.

Resumo Neste artigo é apresentada a utilização de um sensor de umidade para o Arduino no levantamento da curva característica de retenção de água por um sistema poroso, tal como, por exemplo, o solo. Essa curva é muito importante nos estudos ligados à caracterização físico-hídrica do meio poroso. Sua determinação possibilita a investigação das propriedades de retenção de água pelo meio poroso e também a obtenção de parâmetros ligados à geometria dos poros que o compõe. Os pontos experimentais foram interpolados usando a equação de van Genuchten e um modelo simples para a descrição dos poros presentes nas amostras porosas investigadas é apresentado. Este trabalho também teve por objetivo apresentar metodologia inovativa para a realização de experimentos em laboratórios de Física aplicada a estudantes de Engenharias, principalmente: a Ambiental, a Civil e a Agronômica.

Abstract In this paper, we present the use of an Arduino moisture sensor for determining the water retention curve of a porous system, such as, for instance, the soil. This curve is extremely important in studies related to the physical-hydric characterization of a porous systems. Its determination permits examining soil water retention properties and obtaining pore geometry parameters related to the system under investigation. The experimental data was fitted using the van Genuchten equation and a simple model for describing the pores presented in the investigated samples is presented. This work had also the objective of introducing innovative methodology for presenting experimental activities in Applied Physics for undergraduate students of Engineering, such as: Environmental, Agronomic and Civil.

Abstract: Liming can influence crop growth by altering pore geometry, pore size distribution and water retention characteristics in acid soils. The aim of this work is to determine liming effects on the soil structure based on analysis of water retention data using a cubic spline adjustment function. For that, the authors investigated the effect of three lime rates (0, 15 and 20 t ha-1) on soil water retention characteristics and pore size distribution of a silty-clay “Cambissolo Háplico Alumínico” (Dystrudept) located in the SE region of the Paraná State, Brazil. Soil cores were collected after 31 months of the experiment at 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm soil layers. Eleven matric potentials (from 0 to -7000 cm H2O) were employed to calculate soil water retention and pore size distribution curves. The pore size distribution curves revealed trimodal soil porosity with three distinct peaks. Equivalent pore diameters ranging from 9.18 µm to 13.18 µm separated structural and matrix domains. Small differences exist in the pore size distribution curves due to liming and between layers for all peaks. With no-till plus surface liming, the volume of large pores diminished at the two layers and the volume of small pores increased at the surface layer.

RESUMO Os objetivos deste estudo foram avaliar os efeitos de atributos físicos estruturais do solo sobre a retenção de água e desenvolver funções de pedotransferência (FPT) para a estimativa de conteúdos de água (θ) em diferentes potenciais mátricos de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico em sistema convencional (SC) e sistema plantio direto (SPD). Os efeitos de longo prazo dos manejos SC e SPD (mais de 25 anos) sobre a densidade do solo (DS), porosidade total (PT), macroporosidade (Ma), microporosidade (Mi) e retenção de água foram investigados. As FPT foram desenvolvidas para predizer os θs utilizados na determinação da curva de retenção de água apenas para o SPD. O SPD apresentou menor DS e maior PT e Mi que o SC. O SPD aumentou o conteúdo de água retido em poros de tamanho entre 0,2 e 30 μm, em relação ao SC. No entanto, o SC apresentou maior conteúdo de água retido em poros com raio menor que 0,2 μm. As FPTs utilizadas para estimar θ para os potenciais mátricos de -1, -3, -6, -10, -33, -100, -400, -800 e -1500 kPa tiveram acurácia adequada. A DS, Ma, Mi e teor de areia foram as principais variáveis consideradas para estimar o conteúdo de água nesses potenciais mátricos.

ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to evaluate the effects of the soil structural physical attributes on the water retention and to develop pedotransfer functions (PTFs) for the estimation of the soil water content (θ) at different matric potentials of a Dystrophic Red Latosol (Hapludox) under conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) soil management systems. The effects of long-term CT and NT (over 25 years) management on the soil bulk density (BD), total porosity (TP), macroporosity (Ma), microporosity (Mi) and water retention were investigated. The PTFs were developed to predict θ and used to evaluate the soil water retention curve only for the NT system. The NT system was characterized by smaller values of the soil BD and higher values of the soil TP and Mi than the CT system. The NT system exhibited a higher θ retained than the CT system for the pore-size interval of 0.2–30 μm. However, the CT system exhibited a large amount of water retention for pores smaller than 0.2 μm. The PTFs were utilized to estimate θ at matric potentials of -1, -3, -6, -10, -33, -100, -400, -800, and -1,500 kPa with adequate accuracy. The soil BD, Ma, Mi and sand content were the main variables considered to estimate θ for the different matric potentials evaluated.

Os ciclos de umedecimento e secamento (U-S) podem induzir importantes migrações de elementos químicos no solo. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi estudar a possível existência de migração de elementos químicos em amostras de solos submetidas a repetidos ciclos de U-S durante a avaliação da curva de retenção de água do solo. As determinações de Ca2+,Mg2+ e K+ foram obtidas por Espectrometria de Absorção Atômica em três diferentes solos tropicais do Brasil (Latossolo Vermelho-Amarelo, Nitossolo Vermelho e Latossolo Vermelho). Os resultados demonstram um aumento da condutividade elétrica da água extraída das amostras de solo e perda significativa de Ca2+, Mg2+ e K+ após a aplicação de nove ciclos de U-S. Diferenças nas curvas de retenção foram também observadas para todos os solos quando as amostras submetidas aos ciclos de U-S foram comparadas com as amostras não submetidas. Essas diferenças ocorreram tanto na região estrutural quanto textural dos poros do solo. Uma possível explicação para esses resultados pode ser a migração de elementos químicos do solo durante as sequências de ciclos de U-S, os quais podem afetar o desenvolvimento da estrutura do solo.

Wetting and drying (W-D) cycles can induce important elemental migrations in soils. The main purpose of this work was to study the possible existence of soil chemical elemental migrations in samples submitted to repeated W-D cycles during evaluations of soil water retention curve (SWRC). The experimental measurements were carried out by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) for Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ on samples of three different Brazilian tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, Eutric Nitosol and Rhodic Ferralsol). Results demonstrate an increase in the electrical conductivity of the water extracted from the samples and significant losses of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ during the applications of up to nine W-D cycles. It was also observed differences in SWRC for all soils when samples submitted to the application of several W-D cycles were compared with samples not submitted to it. These differences occurred at the region of both structural and textural pores. A possible explanation for these results could be the soil chemical migration during the sequences of W-D cycles, which can affect the soil structure development.

As matas ciliares podem fornecer serviços importantes para os ecossistemas aquáticos sequestrando sedimentos oriundos das áreas de encostas. No entanto, a largura da zona ripária necessária para a retenção de sedimentos ainda não está bem determinada. Aqui são usadas duas técnicas complementares para medir a retenção de sedimentos. As metodologias do137Cs e da composição isotópica do carbono (δ13C) são utilizadas para avaliar a deposição de sedimentos e taxas de erosão em uma encosta cultivada com cana-de-açúcar seguida poruma mata ciliar situada em Iracemápolis, no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. As análises pelas técnicas do 137Cs e δ13C mostraram que a largura da mata ciliar definida pela Lei Ambiental Brasileira (Nº4.771/65) não foi suficiente na retenção de sedimentos oriundos de áreas cultivadas, mas indicou a importância destas florestas como medida de conservação de bacias hidrográficas. A análise complementar de δ13C junto com informações morfológicas do solo permitiu melhor interpretação da redistribuição de sedimentos ao longo das áreas de cana-de-açúcar e mata ciliar.

Riparian forests can provide an important service for aquatic ecosystems by sequestering hillslopederived sediments. However, the width of a riparian buffer zone required to filter sediments is not yet wellunderstood. Here are used two complementary tracers to measure sediment retention. The 137Cs technique and the soil carbon isotopic ratios (δ13C) are utilized to investigate sediment deposition and erosion rates on a slope transect cultivated with sugarcane followed by a secondary riparian forest zone in Iracemápolis, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The 137Cs technique and the δ13C analysis showed that the width of a riparian vegetation in accordance to a Brazilian Environmental Law (Nº4.771/65) was not sufficient in trapping sediments coming from agricultural lands, but indicated the importance of these forests as a conservation measure at the watershed scale. The complementary δ13C analysis together with soil morphology aspects allowed a better interpretation of the sediment redistribution along the sugarcane and riparian forest transects.

A caracterização da estrutura do solo usando a análise de imagens bidimensionais (2-D) constitui um método simples na obtenção de informações essenciais relacionadas com a porosidade do solo e a distribuição do tamanho de poros. Tal informação é importante para obter dados sobre a qualidade do solo, a qual está diretamente ligada à sua estrutura e aos processos de transporte que ocorrem no seu interior. Na maior parte do tempo os solos são submetidos a vários ciclos de umedecimento ("wetting") e secamento ("drying") (W-D) que podem causar importantes mudanças em solos que possuem estruturas danificadas. Neste estudo foi usada a análise de imagens em 2-D na avaliação de possíveis modificações devido a vários ciclos de W-D na estrutura de amostras de solo danificadas.Três solos diferentes em textura (Latossolo vermelho-amarelo distrófico - LVAd; Nitossolo vermelho eutrófico - NVe, Latossolo vermelho distrófico - LVd) foram submetidos a três diferentes tratamentos: 0WD, amostras controle não submetidas a nenhum ciclo de W-D; 3WD e 9WD, amostras submetidas a 3 e 9 ciclos consecutivos de W-D, respectivamente. Foi observado que os ciclos de W-D produziram mudanças significativas nos poros grandes irregulares dos solos LVAd e LVd e nos poros arredondados do NVe. Importantes mudanças nos poros de 35 até 150 µm foram observadas para todos os solos estudados. A partir dos resultados obtidos pode ser dito que o uso da análise de imagens auxiliou com sucesso na explicação de variações no sistema poroso (formato, número e distribuição de tamanho dos poros) devido aos ciclos de W-D para todos os solos analisados.

Soil pore structure characterization using 2-D image analysis constitutes a simple method to obtain essential information related to soil porosity and pore size distribution (PSD). Such information is important to infer on soil quality, which is related to soil structure and transport processes inside the soil. Most of the time soils are submitted to wetting and drying cycles (W-D), which can cause important changes in soils with damaged structures. This report uses 2-D image analysis to evaluate possible modifications induced by W-D cycles on the structure of damaged soil samples. Samples of three tropical soils (Geric Ferralsol, GF; Eutric Nitosol, EN; and Rhodic Ferralsol, RF) were submitted to three treatments: 0WD, the control treatment in which samples were not submitted to any W-D cycle; 3WD and 9WD with samples submitted to 3 and 9 consecutive W-D cycles, respectively. It was observed that W-D cycles produced significant changes in large irregular pores of the GF and RF soils, and in rounded pores of the EN soil. Nevertheless, important changes in smaller pores (35, 75, and 150 µm) were also observed for all soils. As an overall consideration, it can be said that the use of image analysis helped to explain important changes in soil pore systems (shape, number, and size distribution) as consequence of W-D cycles.

Compaction processes can influence soil physical properties such as soil density, porosity, pore size distribution, and processes like soil water and nutrient movements, root system distribution, and others. Soil porosity modification has important consequences like alterations in results of soil water retention curves. These alterations may cause differences in soil water storage calculations and matric potential values, which are utilized in irrigation management systems. Because of this, soil-sampling techniques should avoid alterations of sample structure. In this work soil sample compaction caused by core sampling devices was investigated using the gamma ray computed tomography technique. A first generation tomograph with fixed source-detector arrangement and translation/rotational movements of the sample was utilized to obtain the images. The radioactive source is 241Am, with an activity of 3.7 GBq, and the detector consists of a 3 in. x 3in. NaI(Tl) scintillation crystal coupled to a photomultiplier tube. Soil samples were taken from an experimental field utilizing cylinders 4.0 cm high and 2.6 cm in diameter. Based on image analyses it was possible to detect compacted regions in all samples next to the cylinder wall due to the sampling system. Tomographic unit profiles of the sample permitted to identify higher values of soil density for deeper regions of the sample, and it was possible to determine the average densities and thickness of these layers. Tomographic analyses showed to be a very useful tool for soil compaction characterization and presented many advantages in relation to traditional methods.
